A throwback to Japan's imperial past? For only two days every year, December 23 (the Emperor Akihito's birthday) and January 2, the public is allowed into the Imperial Palace to receive greetings from the Emperor and his family. While I kind of abhor this nationalist symbolism, I couldn't help but show up for the event, which has also become a tourist attraction among gaijin (foreigners). In fact, there are even now crowd control announcements in English.
