Hatsumode (初詣) is the first shrine visit of the year in Japan. Many Japanese come to shrines around midnight and afterward on New Years Eve to make wishes for the new year while buying new o-mamori (charms or amulets) and returning the old ones to the shrine so they can be burned. At the larger temples, such as Meiji Jingu, Sensoji (in Asakusa), and Zoujouji, a carnival like atmosphere occurs all night, with large crowds, bonfires, and food and drink stalls.
At Zoujouji Shrine, Tokyo, Japan. Behind the shrine is Tokyo Tower.
