This is the view from my front door at the Malylyn Guesthouse in Van Vieng, run by an Irishman named Joe. Van Vieng, 3 hours north of Vientiane by bus, is somewhat of a seedy backpacker hellhole, with an incredibly loud and pretentious outdoor disco that really cuts into the serenity of the area in the evening, as well as a bar that constantly plays "Friends" reruns (can hear it as I type this message), but the surrounding countryside is spectacular, which is what is keeping us here for a few days.
